Das Hotel Simplon ist ein Ausstellungsformat, welches auf eine Idee von Jacob Ott zurückgeht. Als Vorstellungsraum ermöglicht Hotel Simplon dem Künstler Kollaborationen einzugehen, ungewöhnliche Orte zu bespielen, eigene Arbeiten ebenso wie Dinge des Alltags sowie Werke anderer Künstler:innen auszustellen, ohne eine individuelle Autorschaft in den Vordergrund zu stellen. Es handelt sich um situationsspezifische Projekte, die alleine oder im Kollektiv entwickelt werden können. Der Künstler spricht von einer «offenen, demokratischen, invasiven und autonomen Struktur» und nennt das Hotel «eine spekulative Architektur». Jacob Ott, der von 2019 bis 2021 das Master-Studium Fine Arts am Institut Kunst Gender Natur HGK Basel FHNW absolvierte, schlüpft dabei in die Rolle des Gastgebers. Die Idee zur Hotelgründung kam Ott während seines Kunststudiums in Basel, als er nach Orten suchte, für die Kunstwerke entstehen oder an denen sie gezeigt werden könnten. Sich mit anderen auszutauschen, offen für künstlerische Zusammenarbeit und experimentelle Formate zu sein, sind wichtige Aspekte des Hotel Simplon. Den Namen übernahm er vom ehemaligen, seit langem als Wohnhaus umgenutzten Hotel Simplon an der Güterstrasse in Basel, in dem er zusammen mit anderen Künstler:innen lebte. In den Projekten des Hotel Simplon werden die Produktionsbedingungen der Ausstellungen selbst zu einer zentralen Thematik. Neben dem Hotel Simplon gründete der Künstler das Ott Orchester und ist als Maler tätig. In seiner aktuellen Malerei befasst er sich mit den Folgen der Klimaerwärmung und untersucht, wie er sich als Künstler im Pyrozän neu orientieren soll.

Das Hotel Simplon ist nicht wirklich ein Hotel und Jacob Ott nicht Hotelier, sondern Künstler. Er interessiert sich für imaginäre Lösungen und deren spielerische Umsetzung in der Kunst. Diese Methode verbindet ihn mit dem französischen Schriftsteller Alfred Jarry (1873 – 1907), dessen Drama Ubu Roi bei der Uraufführung 1896 im Théâtre de l’Œuvre in Paris Theatergeschichte schrieb. Jarry hinterliess ein in jeder Hinsicht herausforderndes und rätselhaftes literarisches Werk und gilt als Begründer der ’Pataphysik, die er in seinem 1911 postum erschienenen Roman Gestes et opinions du docteur Faustroll, pataphysicien als «Wissenschaft der imaginären Lösungen» bezeichnet. In meinem 2019 erschienenen Buch Zeit des Zeigens, das sich mit der Geschichte des Ausstellungsmachens im 20. Jahrhundert befasst, habe ich mich mit der Figur Jarry im Hinblick auf Harald Szeemann (1933 – 2005) auseinandergesetzt. Harald Szeemann übernahm von Jarry nicht nur das «pataphysische Assoziationsprinzip» als kuratorische Methode, die schon in seinen thematischen Ausstellungen in der Kunsthalle Bern in den frühen 1960er-Jahren zur Anwendung kam, auch seinen Entschluss, 1969 die Agentur für geistige Gastarbeit zu gründen und als freier Ausstellungsmacher tätig zu werden, bringt er mit seiner Begegnung mit der ’Pataphysik in Verbindung. Jarry war ein gesellschaftlicher Aussenseiter, ein Provokateur des guten Geschmacks, dessen zeitweilige Erfolge als Schriftsteller schnell wieder vergessen waren. Er schrieb für symbolistische Zeitschriften, stand in persönlichem Kontakt mit Stéphane Mallarmé (1842 – 1898) und gründete mit Rémy de Gourmont (1858 – 1915) 1894 die Zeitschrift L’Ymagier. In den von ihm lancierten Magazinen publizierten seine Künstlerfreunde, insbesondere aus dem weiteren Kreis der Nabis. In seinem 2012 erschienenen Useless Guide zur ’Pataphysik schreibt Andrew Hugill, diese sei keine Bewegung wie Symbolismus, Dadaismus, Futurismus, Surrealismus oder Situationismus, und auch keine Philosophie, sondern eher eine Sammlung von Ideen, was möglicherweise auch erkläre, weshalb sie ihre Faszinationskraft durch das ganze 20. Jahrhundert und bis in die Gegenwart bewahren konnte. Sicher ist, die «Wissenschaft imaginärer Lösungen» war eine Impulsgeberin sowohl der ersten als auch der zweiten künstlerischen Moderne. Und sie hat bis heute nichts von ihrer Faszinationskraft verloren. In seinem Schaffen bediente Alfred Jarry den französischen Symbolismus, zugleich überwand er ihn nach dem «Prinzip von der ‹Identität der Gegensätze›», wie es Alastair Brotchie, Autor der umfassendsten und noch immer aktuellsten Biografie von Alfred Jarry 2014 in der ’Pataphysik ausmacht. Künstler spielten eine wichtige Rolle bei der Überlieferung und der Aktualisierung der Ideen Jarrys, sowohl vor als auch nach der Gründung des Collège de ’Pataphysique im Jahr 1948. Die «Identität der Gegensätze» finde ich auch in den Arbeiten von Jacob Ott und insbesondere in seinem Ausstellungsformat Hotel Simplon.

Hotel Simplon zeigt im TANK mit Berichte aus einem Wohnzimmerregal (2025) eine Installation, die auf eine frühere Ausstellung Bezug nimmt, welche Jacob Ott zusammen mit der Künstlerin Engy Mohsen 2023 für den Kunstraum Rhythmus Messy Cambio in Basel produzierte. Die Installation umfasst Bücher und Musikinstrumente, alles Leihgaben unterschiedlicher Herkunft. Gemeinsam ist den im Hotel Simplon in einer neuen temporären Anordnung und in überraschenden inhaltlichen Konstellationen direkt auf dem Boden ausgestellten Objekten, dass deren Eigentümer:innen für sie keine Verwendung haben, ausser sie einfach zu besitzen. Die Instrumente werden von ihnen nicht gespielt, die Bücher bleiben ungelesen. Es sind schlummernde Ressourcen, die in der Ausstellung zugleich auf das Netzwerk des Künstlers verweisen und in skulpturaler Form sichtbar werden. Jedes einzelne der ausgeliehenen Instrumente ist mit einem Buch kombiniert. Am Eröffnungsabend wird die in farbiges Licht getauchte Installation für einen Moment belebt. Aus den Büchern wird eine beliebige Textstelle vorgelesen, gleichzeitig werden die verschiedenen Instrumente gespielt. Die synchrone und momentane Aktivierung der Installation ist vielleicht auch eine Hommage an Fluxus und die Klangcollagen des Music Circus (1967) von John Cage (1912 – 1992).

Über Hotel Simplon

Seit der Hotelgründung im Jahre 2020 durch Jacob Ott wurden mehrere Ausstellungen realisiert, darunter Regionale 20 im Kunsthaus Baselland in Basel (2020), in Kollaboration mit Johannes Willi, und Hotel Simplon im Kunstraum Giulietta in Basel (2021). Giulietta war ein von Künstler:innen gegründeter Ausstellungsraum in einer ehemaligen Autowerkstatt, zu der auch ein Alfa Romeo Showroom gehörte, die beide zum Abriss bestimmt waren und als Zwischennutzung für Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen verwendet wurden. 2022 war das Hotel Simplon mit einem Beitrag an der Performancereihe I Hear a New World – 14 Miaows of the Future in der Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, kuratiert von Chus Martínez, beteiligt. 2023 entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit Engy Mohsen die Installation Berichte aus dem Raum unter einer Treppe als Teil der Ausstellung Neubau Tropeninstitut im Kunstraum Rhythmus Messy Cambio in Basel. Zuletzt zeigte Hotel Simplon 2024 die Gruppenausstellung Water Closet Courtesy Flush / A Bathroom in New York, kuratiert von Jacob Ott in Zusammenarbeit mit Marco Bene.

Jacob Ott (geboren in Dorfen, Deutschland) ist Künstler und lebt in Basel. Er schloss 2017 den Bachelor of Fine Arts an der Hochschule für Kunst, Design und Populäre Musik Freiburg i. Br. ab, studierte von 2017 bis 2018 an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart und absolvierte ein Masterstudium in Fine Arts am Institut Kunst Gender Natur HGK Basel FHNW.

Hotel Simplon is an exhibition format based on an idea by artist Jacob Ott. As a space of imagination, the Hotel Simplon enables the artist to collaborate, to activate unexpected situations, to exhibit his own artworks and everyday objects, as well as works by other artists, without emphasizing individual authorship. These situation-specific projects can be developed individually or collectively. The artist speaks of an “open, democratic, invasive, and autonomous structure” and calls the hotel “a speculative architecture.” Ott, who completed a master’s degree in Fine Arts at the Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW, from 2019 to 2021, here takes on the role of the host. The idea for founding the hotel was conceived by Ott during his art studies in Basel when he was looking for places to create artworks or exhibit them. Exchanging with others, being open to artistic collaboration, and to experimental formats are important aspects of Hotel Simplon. He adopted the name from the former Hotel Simplon in Güterstrasse in Basel, which had been repurposed as a residential building and where he lived with other artists. In the projects of Hotel Simplon, the production conditions of the exhibitions themselves become a central topic. In addition to Hotel Simplon, the artist founded the Ott Orchester and works as a painter. In his current painting, he addresses the consequences of global warming and explores how he, as an artist, can reorient himself in the Pyrocene.

Hotel Simplon is not really a hotel, and Ott is not a hotelier but an artist. He is interested in imaginary solutions and their playful implementation in art. This method connects him with the French writer Alfred Jarry (1873 – 1907), whose drama Ubu Roi made theater history at its premiere in 1896 at the Théâtre de l’Œuvre in Paris. Jarry created a literary oeuvre that was challenging and enigmatic in every way and he is considered the founder of ’Pataphysics, which he described in his posthumously published 1911 novel Gestes et opinions du docteur Faustroll, pataphysicien as “the science of imaginary solutions.” In my 2019 book Zeit des Zeigens, which addresses the history of exhibition-making in the 20th century, I explored the figure of Jarry in relation to Harald Szeemann (1933 – 2005). Szeemann not only adopted Jarry’s “pataphysical principle of association” as a curatorial method, which he already applied in his thematic exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Bern in the early 1960s, but also his decision to found the “Agentur für geistige Gastarbeit” in 1969 and work as an independent curator is associated with his encounter with ’Pataphysics. Jarry was a social outsider, a provocateur of good taste, whose temporary successes as a writer were quickly forgotten. He wrote for symbolist magazines, was in personal contact with Stéphane Mallarmé (1842 – 1898), and founded the magazine L’Ymagier with Rémy de Gourmont (1858 – 1915) in 1894. His artist friends, particularly those from the broader circle of the Nabis, published in the magazines he launched. In his 2012 book Useless Guide to ’Pataphysics, Andrew Hugill writes that it is not a movement like Symbolism, Dadaism, Futurism, Surrealism, or Situationism, nor a philosophy, but rather a collection of ideas, which may explain why it has retained its fascination throughout the 20th century and into the present. Certainly, the “science of imaginary solutions” was an impetus for both the first and second artistic modernism. And to this day it has not lost any of its fascination. With his work, Jarry served French Symbolism, while at the same time overcoming it according to the “principle of the ‘identity of opposites’,” as Alastair Brotchie, author of the most comprehensive and still the most up-to-date biography of Jarry in 2014, identifies in ’Pataphysics. Artists played an important role in transmitting and updating Jarry’s ideas, both before and after the founding of the Collège de ’Pataphysique in 1948. I also find the “identity of opposites” in the works of Ott, particularly in his exhibition format Hotel Simplon.

With Reports from a Shelf in the Living Room (2025), Hotel Simplon presents at der TANK an installation that refers to a previous exhibition realized by Ott together with artist Engy Mohsen in 2023 for the art space Rhythmus Messy Cambio in Basel. The installation includes books and musical instruments, all on loan from various sources. The objects in the Hotel Simplon exhibition, presented in a new temporary arrangement, in unanticipated thematic constellations and directly on the floor, share one thing in common: their owners have no real use for them other than just owning them. The instruments are left unplayed and the books remain unread. These slumbering resources refer to the artist’s network and appear in sculptural form. Each of the borrowed instrument is paired with a book. During the opening, the installation, immersed in colored light, will come to life for a moment. Random passages from the books will be read while the various instruments are played at the same time. This synchronous and momentary activation of the installation may also be an homage to Fluxus and the sound collages of Music Circus (1967) by John Cage’s (1912 – 1992).

About Hotel Simplon

Since the founding of the hotel by Jacob Ott in 2020, several exhibitions have been realized, including Regionale 20 at Kunsthaus Baselland in Basel (2020), in collaboration with Johannes Willi, and Hotel Simplon at the art space Giulietta in Basel (2021). Giulietta was an artist run exhibition space in a former car workshop, which also included an Alfa Romeo showroom. Both of them were destined for demolition and used as interim spaces for exhibitions and events. In 2022, Hotel Simplon participated with a contribution to the performance series I Hear a New World – 14 Miaows of the Future at the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, curated by Chus Martínez. In 2023, the installation Berichte aus dem Raum unter einer Treppe was created in collaboration with Engy Mohsen as part of the exhibition Neubau Tropeninstitut at the art space Rhythmus Messy Cambio in Basel. Most recently, in 2024, Hotel Simplon presented the group exhibition Water Closet Courtesy Flush / A Bathroom in New York, curated by Ott in collaboration with Marco Bene.
