With VORHANG at der TANK, Emil Michael Klein presents a selection of his textile works in an installation-like setting for the first time. These were created over the past ten years for exhibitions of his paintings or for special occasions such as the exhibition Stop Painting at the Fondazione Prada in Venice in 2021, curated by Peter Fischli. After training as a wood sculptor at the Schule für Holzbildhauerei in Brienz, Emil Michael Klein studied Fine Arts in the bachelor’s program at the Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW from 2002 to 2005, and then completed a master’s degree at the École cantonale d'art de Lausanne (ECAL). From 2014 to 2017, the artist taught painting at the Institute Art Gender Nature. His work belongs historically to the context of non-figurative post-painterly abstraction. Emil Michael Klein’s curtains embody an expanded concept of the artwork. Central to these works is the depiction and multifaceted exploration of the artist’s signature, which in his textile pieces assumes the role of the figure and emerges as a logo.
The exhibition is the 17th project of a series of exhibitions initiated in 2017, that presents commissions by former students and lecturers of the Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW.
