Batik ist eine althergebrachte Textilfärbetechnik, die in Java, Indonesien, entwickelt wurde und einen hohen symbolischen Wert hat. Chinesische, arabische, indische und europäische Händler:innen verbreiteten Batik in Asien. Im europäischen Kontext wurde sie erstmals Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts erwähnt. Ab den 1830er-Jahren mechanisierten holländische Textilfabrikanten die Produktion. Da sich die Menschen auf Java weigerten, die Ergebnisse zu kaufen, gelangten diese nach Westafrika, wo eine eigene, bis heute existierende Tradition entstand. Im 19. Jahrhundert versuchte die Schweizer Textilindustrie mit Batikimitaten lukrative Märkte zu erobern, insbesondere vom Kanton Glarus aus – nur eine Stunde von Zürich entfernt, wo Regula Humm lebte.

Die Technik der Wachsreservierung ist ein viel komplexeres und prozessbasierteres Verfahren, als es auf den ersten Blick scheint. Sie beinhaltet das Auftragen von Wachs auf ein flaches Stück Stoff, entweder durch Zeichnen, wie bei Regula Humm, oder durch Stempeln. Dann wird der Stoff eingefärbt. Der Farbe dringt in die freiliegenden Fasern, ausser in den Bereich, auf den Wachs aufgetragen wurde (Reservierung). Schliesslich wird der Stoff gewaschen. Dieser Vorgang kann wiederholt werden, um mehrere Szenen zu schaffen, Details zu definieren und verschiedene Erzählungen miteinander zu verflechten, wie in den Werken von Regula Humm. Die politische Dimension dieses Prozesses ist in ihrem Werk offenkundig. Warum? Weil sie einen Weg gefunden hat, komplexe Szenen und Erzählungen auf einem leichten Material darzustellen, das zu Hause einfach zu handhaben ist, mit dem sich in einem fast häuslichen Kontext arbeiten lässt, auch ohne ein grosses Studio. Sie hat sich mit vielschichtigen Fragen auseinandergesetzt und diese auf grosse Stoffe «gezeichnet», sie hat sich vom Leben um sie herum inspirieren lassen. Das Material Stoff ermöglicht es der Künstlerin, leichte Werke zu schaffen, die mit einer einfachen Vorrichtung getragen und aufgehängt werden können. Tradierte Mythen, aktuelle Diskurse, mentale Prozesse und narrative Formen, die es uns Menschen ermöglichen, eine Geschichte, eine Botschaft und unsere Werte zu übermitteln sind für Regula Humms künstlerische Praxis zentral.

Fasziniert von Regula Humms Schaffen hat Kathrin Siegrist, eine Basler Künstlerin einer jüngeren Generation, die bei uns am Institut Kunst Gender Natur HGK Basel FHNW arbeitet, eine ebenso raumgreifende wie fluide Installation aus modifiziertem und gefärbten Fallschirmstoff geschaffen, welche als Decke fungiert und die Präsentation im TANK umhüllt. Da dieser ein Glaskubus ist, war es wichtig, eine räumliche Intervention zu entwickeln, die wie Blütenblätter einer Blume die Arbeiten von Regula Humm umfasst und schützt. Für beide Künstlerinnen ist der leichte Stoff ein Medium des feministischen Dissens. Feminismus beginnt mit Wahrnehmung, wobei die Haut ein ebenso wichtiges Organ wie das Gehirn ist, um Gedanken zu vermitteln. Textilien sind sinnlich, sie besitzen eine Haptik, die nach Berührung verlangt, statt Distanz zu erzeugen. Die Arbeit mit Stoff ist zugleich ein Weben, eine der ältesten existierenden Technologien, die eine Brücke zwischen Spinnen und Menschen schlägt. Marginalisiert und feminisiert, entstehen die textilen Welten von Regula Humm mit einem intellektuellen und politischen Anspruch, der einzigartig und unverwechselbar ist. Batik ist hier ein Code, der sich der Geradlinigkeit der Malerei und der Binarität von Abstraktion und Darstellung entzieht. Die Rückbesinnung auf das Taktile und auf physische Intimität in ihrem Werk korrespondiert mit einer zeitgenössischen Reflexion des Bildschirms als Haut, welche wir in unseren digitalen Geräten andauernd berühren. Eine Berührung, die wir anderen, Tieren, Menschen in unserem Umfeld oder der Natur nicht zukommen lassen.

Batik is an ancient textile dyeing technique developed in Java, Indonesia, where it has a great symbolic value. Chinese, Arab, Indian, and European traders spread batik across Asia. It was first mentioned in the European context in the mid-17th century. From the 1830s, Dutch textile manufacturers mechanized the production. As the Javanese refused to buy the result, it made its way to West Africa, where a tradition of its own emerged and continues to this day. In the 19th century, the Swiss textile industry aimed to conquer the markets with batik imitations, primarily in the canton of Glarus, only one hour from Zurich, where Regula Humm was based.

The wax-resist technique is a much more complex and procedural method than it may appear at first glance. It implies the application of wax onto a flat piece of fabric by either drawing, like Regula Humm, or stamping it. Next, the fabric is dyed. The dye penetrates the exposed fiber but not the area where the wax was applied (resist area). Then, the fabric is washed. This operation can be repeated to create multiple scenes, define details, and entangle the different narratives as is seen in the works of Regula Humm. The political dimensions of this process are obvious in her work. Why? Because she found a way of creating very intricate scenes and narratives in a light material easy to manipulate at home, to work within an almost domestic context, without a large studio. She could address complex questions and “draw them” on large pieces of cloth, she could even take inspiration from her garden, from the life around her. Fabric as a material provided the artist with a lightweight work that allows for a simple and easy structural support to carry it. Inherited myths, current discourses, mental processes, and narrative forms that allow us, humans, to transmit a story, a message, and our values, all of this is essential to the practice of Regula Humm.

Fascinated by Regula Humm’s work, Kathrin Siegrist, a Basel-based artist of a younger generation who works with us at the Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW, has created a fabric installation to encompass the presentation at der TANK. Given the fact that the space is a glass cube, it was important to generate a light filter similar to the petal of a flower, protecting Regula Humm’s works from the direct sunlight. Kathrin Siegrist created with modified and dyed parachute fabric a piece that acts both as a ceiling to embrace and protect the works. To both artists, light fabric is a medium of feminist dissent. Feminism begins with perception, with the skin being an organ as important as the brain to convey thought. Textiles are sensuous, they possess a haptic that demands touch instead of producing a distance. Working on fabrics means working on weaving, the oldest existing technology, one that bridges spiders with humans. Marginalized and feminized, the textile worlds of Regula Humm emerge with an intellectual and political ambition that is unique and distinctive. Batik is in her hands a code that defies the straightforwardness of painting and the binaries of abstraction versus representation. Returning to tactility and physical intimacy equals in her work a contemporary reflection of the screen as skin that we touch in devices all day. A touch that we do not apply to others, to animals, to humans close by, or to nature.
