Die Videoarbeit Die Erfindung der Welt (1998) wurde für sechs Röhrenmonitore konzipiert und entstand für eine Ausstellung der Künstlerinnen in der Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. 1999 war die Installation im Palazzo Liestal und im folgenden Jahr im Kunstverein Konstanz zu sehen. Die 6-Kanal-Videoarbeit wird auf zwei nebeneinander stehende Türme übertragen, beide bestehen aus je drei übereinander gestapelten Röhrenmonitoren. Zu sehen sind die beiden Künstlerinnen, jede in der Rolle der Doppelgängerin der anderen und als bewegte Ganzfigur. Wer in dieser komischen, selbstironischen, aber auch wunderlichen Schöpfungsgeschichte wen nachahmt, und aus welchem Grund, oder ob die beiden gespiegelten, in Habitus und Aktion ganz und gar nicht bis ins letzte Detail aufeinander abgestimmten Figuren synchron wahrnehmbar sein möchten, das bleibt bis am Schluss offen. «Die große Geste, die die Erfindung der Welt erwarten läßt,» so Jessica Mueller 1999 im Ausstellungskatalog der Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, «stellt sich als irritierender Fingerzeig auf privates Leben dar». In Baden-Baden war die 6-Kanal-Videoarbeit mit einer Bodenarbeit aus sechs Lichtobjekten kombiniert, die «Frühbeete» darstellten, und die den Saal in ein grünes Licht tauchten. In der Ausstellung im TANK, die sinnigerweise zu Beginn der Vegetationsperiode eröffnet, ist Die Erfindung der Welt wieder zusammen mit einer Bodenarbeit ausgestellt. Dieses Mal sind es im Ausstellungsraum verteilte Flachbildschirme, auf denen Videobilder gezeigt werden. Es handelt sich um eine Montage aus Arbeiten unterschiedlicher Schaffensperioden, welche Die Erfindung der Welt im seither entstandenen Werk der beiden Künstlerinnen neu kontextualisiert.  
 
Die monumentale Fotografie Stabile Taten (2024) auf der einzigen Wand im TANK spielt auf das titelgebende Werk und die darin dargestellte Paarbeziehung an. Sie handelt von der Balance in der Vertikalen und gegenseitiger Abhängigkeit, aber auch von Konzentration und der Schönheit des Risikos. Die Arbeit speist sich aus der gemeinsamen performativen Praxis, ist aber auch von der räumlichen Situation angeregt und macht deutlich, dass Kunst stets von der Beziehung zwischen Fiktion und Realität handelt. Muda Mathis und Sus Zwick arbeiten mit aus ihrem Schaffen bekannten Requisiten wie Tisch, Stange oder Gefäss und den charakteristischen Kostümen, die nicht mit der Mode gehen. Stabile Taten korrespondiert aber auch mit den ebenfalls grossformatigen Fotoarbeiten von Anna und Bernhard Blume, die mit ihrer gemeinsamen Arbeit in den 1980er-Jahren bekannt geworden sind und 1987 in der Kunsthalle Basel die Ausstellung Fotos aus dem wirklichen Leben zeigten.  
 
Ich hatte das Glück, zusammen mit Muda Mathis und Jürg Stäuble am Institut Kunst Gender Natur HGK Basel FHNW zu unterrichten. In den Diskussionen im Forum der Studierenden des Bachelor-Studiengangs, in dem wir gemeinsam lehrten, und in unserer, im Dialog vermittelten Werkkritik studentischer Arbeiten spielte das künstlerische Denken in Bildformeln und Analogien, das Muda Mathis und Sus Zwick in ihrem gemeinsamen Schaffen einsetzen, ebenfalls eine zentrale Rolle. Ich meine damit nicht den assoziativen und individuellen Zugang zu Bildern, der uns allen zusteht und heute in der Rezeption von zeitgenössischer Kunst meist bestimmend ist, sondern die Herausarbeitung, Sichtbarmachung und sprachliche Vergegenwärtigung von Verwandtschaftsstrukturen in künstlerischen Werken. 
  
2005 gaben Muda Mathis und Sus Zwick in Kyiv mit Les Reines Prochaines zwei Konzerte. Die Reise in die Ukraine auf Einladung der Kuratorinnen Olga Zhuk und Nadya Prigodich brachte Muda Mathis und Sus Zwick vor Ort in Kontakt mit ukrainischen Künstler:innen und bot auch Gelegenheit, Videoarbeiten zu zeigen und einen Workshop durchzuführen. Zusammen mit der Kamerafrau Iris Ganz und der Übersetzerin Viktoryia Levenko erarbeiteten sie während und nach dieser Reise den Videoessay Kiev Connection (2006), den Sus Zwick und Muda Mathis am Sonntag, 24. März 2024 in der Ausstellung zeigen werden.

Muda Mathis und Sus Zwick leben und arbeiten in Basel. Muda Mathis studierte an der F+F Schule für experimentelle Gestaltung in Zürich, an der Sigurd Leeder School of Dance in Herisau sowie an der von René Pulfer 1985 an der Schule für Gestaltung in Basel gegründeten Klasse für Audiovisuelle Gestaltung. Während dieser Ausbildung in der Videoklasse lernen Muda Mathis und Sus Zwick sich kennen. Seit 1982 ist Muda Mathis als Künstlerin in den Bereichen Performance, Video, Installation und Musik tätig. Sie gehört zu den Gründungsmitgliedern der Performanceband Les Reines Prochaines. Von 1996 bis 2017 unterrichtete sie am Institut Kunst Gender Natur HGK Basel FHNW. Ein Schwerpunkt ihrer Lehrtätigkeit bildete die Performance. Zusammen mit Sabine Gehardt Fink und Margarit von Büren war sie Herausgeberin der Performance Chronik Basel, welche die Geschichte der Performance in Basel von 1968 bis 2006 dokumentiert. Seither arbeitet sie innerhalb eines grossen Netzwerks an der Geschichte der Performance in der Schweiz. Sus Zwick studierte nach einer Ausbildung zur Logopädin und Heilpädagogin an der Universität Fribourg ebenfalls an der Videoklasse in Basel. Sie ist Mitbegründerin der Produktions- und Ateliergemeinschaft VIA VideoAudioFotoKunst in Basel und Mitglied von Les Reines Prochaines. Muda Mathis und Sus Zwick wurden 2009 mit dem Prix Meret Oppenheim ausgezeichnet.

The video work Die Erfindung der Welt (The Invention of the World, 1998) was conceived for six tube monitors and first created for an exhibition by the artists at the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. In 1999 the installation was presented at the Palazzo Liestal, and, the following year, at Kunstverein Konstanz. The six-channel video work is projected onto two towers standing next to each other, each consisting of three tube monitors stacked on top of each other. The two artists can be seen, each in the role of the other’s doppelganger and as a moving full-length figure. Who is imitating who in this comical, self-ironic, and whimsical creation story, and for what reason, remains an open question, as does whether the two mirrored figures, whose habitus and actions are not at all coordinated down to the last detail, want to be perceived synchronously. “The grand gesture that leads us to expect the invention of the world,” writes Jessica Mueller in the 1999 exhibition catalog of the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, “presents itself as an irritating pointer to private life.” In Baden-Baden, the six-channel video work was combined with a floor piece consisting of six light objects that represented “cold frames,” bathing the hall in a green light. In the exhibition at der TANK, which opens at the beginning of the growing season, Die Erfindung der Welt is once again exhibited together with a floor work. This time there are flat screens distributed throughout the exhibition space on which video images are shown. It is a montage of works from different creative periods, which re-contextualizes Die Erfindung der Welt in the work of the two artists since then. 
 
The monumental photograph Stabile Taten (Stable Actions, 2024), hung on the only wall in der TANK, alludes to the work that gives the exhibition its title and the couple’s relationship it depicts. It is about vertical balance and mutual dependence, but also about concentration and the beauty of risk. The work is fed by a joint performative practice, but is also inspired by the spatial situation and makes it clear that art is always about the relationship between fiction and reality. Mathis and Zwick work with props familiar from their work, such as tables, poles, and vessels, and their characteristic costumes, which do not go with the times. Stabile Taten also corresponds with the large-format photographic works of Anna and Bernhard Blume, who became known for their joint work in the 1980s and presented the exhibition, Fotos aus dem wirklichen Leben, at Kunsthalle Basel, in 1987. 
 
I was very lucky to teach together with Mathis and Jürg Stäuble at the Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW. The artistic thinking in pictorial formulas and analogies, which Mathis and Zwick use in their joint work, also played a central role in the discussions in the Forum of the students of the bachelor’s program, in which we taught together, and in our dialogue-based critique of student works. By this I do not mean the associative and individual approach to images that we are all entitled to and which is usually dominant in the reception of contemporary art today, but rather the elaboration, visualization, and linguistic visualization of kinship structures in artistic works. 
 
In 2005, Mathis and Zwick held two concerts in Kyiv with Les Reines Prochaines. The trip to Ukraine at the invitation of curators Olga Zhuk and Nadya Prigodich brought the artists into contact with Ukrainian artists and also offered them the opportunity to present video works and hold a workshop. Together with camerawoman Iris Ganz and translator Viktoryia Levenko, they created the video essay Kiev Connection (2006) during and after this trip, which Zwick and Mathis will present in the exhibition on Sunday 24 March 2024.

Muda Mathis and Sus Zwick live and work in Basel. Mathis studied at the F+F School for Experimental Design, in Zurich; at the Sigurd Leeder School of Dance, in Herisau; and as part of the class for audiovisual design founded by René Pulfer at the Basel School of Design, in 1985. It was during this training in the video class that Mathis and Zwick met. Mathis has been working as an artist in the fields of performance, video, installation, and music since 1982. She is one of the founding members of the performance band Les Reines Prochaines. From 1996 to 2017, she taught at the Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW, with a focus on performance practices. Together with Sabine Gehardt Fink and Margarit von Büren, she edited the Performance Chronik Basel, which documents the history of performance in Basel from 1968 to 2006. Since then, she has been working within a large network on the history of performance in Switzerland. After training as a speech therapist and curative teacher at the University of Fribourg, Zwick also studied video in Basel. She is a co-founder of the production and studio community VIA VideoAudioFotoKunst, in Basel, and a member of Les Reines Prochaines. Mathis and Zwick were awarded the Prix Meret Oppenheim in 2009.
