Gil Pellatons Erzählungen sind merkwürdig. Sie handeln in einprägsamen Bildern von seltsamen, wohl nicht vollständig zu entschlüsselnden Begebenheiten. Ein lächelnder Mund aus Koriander etwa, so gross wie ein Mensch, oder filigrane Tiermasken, die er in seinen Performances trägt. Fuss und Schuh sind weitere Motive, die der Künstler in seinem Schaffen seit einigen Jahren immer wieder aufgreift, so auch in dieser Ausstellung. Der Schuh kann bei ihm als Fuss und der Fuss als Schuh aufgefasst werden. Es begann damit, dass er für sich selbst ein Paar Lederschuhe anfertigte, die zwar passten, und doch eher wie ein Requisit für eine Performance wirkten denn als funktionale Fussbekleidung. Der Fuss wird nicht wie im Märchen mit dem scharfen Messer dem Schuh angepasst, der Schuh selbst nimmt die Form des Fusses an und erscheint bei Pellaton als autonomer Körperteil. Ein Blick in die Geschichte erinnert an die Anfänge der modernen figurativen Plastik. Der französische Bildhauer Auguste Rodin (1840 – 1917) löste die Plastik von ihrer darstellenden Funktion. Schon den Zeitgenoss*innen war bewusst, dass Rodin mit der extensiven Fragmentierung der Figur als Bildhauer neue Wege beschritt und dabei die Ausdruckskraft des Körperlichen steigerte. Der Dichter Rainer Maria Rilke, der kurze Zeit als Privatsekretär von Rodin arbeitete, schrieb am 2. September 1902 nach seinem ersten Besuch im Atelier an seine Frau Clara: «Da liegen meterweit nur Bruchstücke, eines neben dem andern. […] Jeder dieser Brocken ist von einer so eminenten und ergreifenden Einheit, so allein möglich […], dass man vergisst, dass es nur Teile und oft Teile von verschiedenen Körpern sind, die da so leidenschaftlich aneinander hängen.» Ein Fragment kann nun für das Ganze stehen, ohne dass die Bruchstückhaftigkeit weiter thematisiert würde. In seinem Spätwerk arbeitete Rodin an Assemblagen, die Skulpturfragmente und antike Gefässe verbinden. Diese Arbeiten behandeln Kultur als epochenübergreifenden, ungerichteten und offenen Transformationsprozess. Sein Werk markiert den Beginn einer neuen Auffassung von Bildhauerei. Das «Non-finito», die Ersetzung des harmonischen Ganzen durch das Fragment, um eine Vorstellungsform zu erzeugen, spielt dabei eine zentrale Rolle. «Non-finito» meint die offensichtliche Inkongruenz, die Nichtübereinstimmung zwischen dem unvollendeten Zustand und der vorstellbaren Endform – ein Spannungsverhältnis, die man aber als künstlerisch sinnvoll erlebt.

In der westlichen Kunstgeschichte spielen Fragmente aber natürlich nicht erst in der Moderne bei Auguste Rodin eine prominente Rolle, sie stehen am Anfang jeder historischen Epoche. Sie bilden die Brücke zwischen dem, was vergangen ist und dem, was möglicherweise bevorsteht. So auch in dieser Ausstellung, die, so gibt es der Titel vor, von einer Chimäre handelt, von der sich der Künstler kein abschliessendes Bild machen konnte. Mischwesen (aus Tieren unterschiedlicher Arten, aber auch zwischen Mensch, Tier und Pflanze) spielen in den Mythologien vieler Kulturen eine zentrale Rolle. In der griechischen Mythologie spricht man von diesen Mischwesen als Chimäre. In der Biologie wird die Bezeichnung für Organismen verwendet, die aus genetisch unterschiedlichen Stoffen bestehen.

Gil Pellaton arbeitet installativ und medienübergreifend. Die Ausstellung setzt sich aus verschiedenen, aufeinander bezogenen Teilinstallationen zusammen. Sie bilden das Gelände und die Umgebung für uns und einen allfälligen Auftritt der namenlosen und abwesenden Figur. Vakuumierte, in transparentem Plastik eingeschweisste Materialien hängen im Ausstellungsraum. Organische Stoffe wie Tiger Balsam und Koriander in früheren Werken oder eine Mischung aus Kurkuma und Knochenleim, die Pellaton für den Guss jener Objekte verwendet hat, die in dieser Ausstellung an einer von der Decke in den Raum führenden Vorrichtung hängen, geben Anhaltspunkte für den inhaltlichen Horizont, vor dem seine Arbeit wahrgenommen werden kann. Wir blicken in die uns entgegengestreckten sechs Handspiegel und sehen in den polierten, unebenen Metalloberflächen Lichtreflexe und vielleicht sogar unser verzerrtes Spiegelbild. Wir sind an einem sonnigen Tag bei ruhiger See mit zwei Personen auf einem Boot und folgen deren spielerischen Interaktion. Unser Blick wechselt zwischen dieser intimen, kleinräumigen Welt und einem unbestimmten, rätselhaften Aussen hin und her. Die namenlosen Gestalten werden natürlich nicht auftreten. An ihrer Stelle sind wir in dieser fremden Welt unterwegs, um in ihre Rolle hineinzuwachsen.

Gil Pellaton lebt und arbeitet in Biel/Bienne, wo er geboren wurde und auch aufgewachsen ist. An der dortigen Ecole d’Arts Visuels studierte er von 2002 bis 2005 Grafik. Im Zentrum seiner freien künstlerischen Tätigkeit stand zunächst während einiger Jahre die Malerei, heute arbeitet er meistens installativ und medienübergreifend. Seine Ausbildung setzte Pellaton von 2015 bis 2017 am Institut Kunst der HGK FHNW in Basel fort und schloss das Studium mit einem Master in Fine Arts ab. 2010 wurde er mit dem Kiefer Hablitzel / Göhner Kunstpreis und 2020 mit dem Louise Aeschlimann und Margareta Corti-Stipendium ausgezeichnet. Pellaton entfaltete in den vergangenen Jahren eine intensive und inhaltlich programmatische Ausstellungstätigkeit. Als Artist-in-Residence lebte und arbeitete er in Buenos Aires, Porto, Genua und zuletzt in New York.

Die Ausstellung von Gil Pellaton ist nach (soir) & (matin) von René Pulfer (2021), Our Common Space: Tiphanie Kim Mall, Mia Sanchez, Valentina Stieger (2020), Louise Guerra Archive: Keine richtige Schule (2019), Kaspar Müller: Rendering of service in the pitch of the bruise (2019), Jürg Stäuble & Hannah Villiger (2018), Kasia Klimpel – Berge(2018) und Werner von Mutzenbecher – 8/1/D999R (2017) das achte Projekt in einer 2017 begonnenen Reihe mit Arbeiten von ehemaligen Studierenden und Dozierenden des Institut Kunst.

Gil Pellaton’s tales are unusual. Their memorable images depict strange occurrences that cannot be fully deciphered: a smiling coriander mouth that is the size of a human being, for example, or intricate animal masks that he wears during his performances. Over the past few years, feet and shoes have been among the motifs that the artist has repeatedly taken up, including in this exhibition. In his work, a shoe can function as a foot and a foot as a shoe. It all started when he made a pair of leather shoes for himself. Even though they fit, they seemed more like a performance prop than functional footwear. A foot is not carved with a sharp knife to fit the shoe, as in the fairy tale; the shoe itself adopts the foot’s form and appears in Pellaton’s work as an autonomous body part. Looking back into history, we can recall the beginnings of modern figurative sculpture. French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840 – 1917) freed sculpture from its representational function. As his contemporaries had already taken note, Rodin broke new ground as a sculptor by extensively fragmenting the figure, thus enhancing the expressive force of the corporeal. Rainer Maria Rilke worked for a short time as Rodin’s private secretary. On 2 September 1902, after his first visit to Rodin’s studio, the poet wrote to his wife Clara: “There it lies, yard by yard, only fragments, one beside the other. […] Each of these bits is of such an eminent, striking unity, so possible by itself […], that one forgets they are only parts, and often parts of different bodies that cling to each other so passionately there.” A fragment could now stand for the whole without having to further dwell on its fractionality. In his later period, Rodin worked on assemblages that combined sculptural fragments and ancient vessels. These works approach culture as an epoch-spanning, non-directional, and open-ended process of transformation. His oeuvre marks the beginning of a new conception of sculpture. This is particularly enabled by the non finito technique, in which the creation of an idea requires the substitution of a harmonic whole for the fragment. Non finito proposes the obvious incongruity, the non-conformity between an unfinished state and the planned final form. It is a charged relationship, but one that is experienced as artistically meaningful.

In the history of Western art, fragments played a significant role even before Auguste Rodin’s modern art. Indeed, they appear at the beginning of every historical epoch, providing a link between what has passed and what may lie ahead. This also applies to this exhibition. As the title suggests, it is about a chimera whose final image the artist was unable to conceive. Hybrid beings (composed of animals from different species, but also combining humans, animals, and plants) play a pivotal role in many cultures’ mythologies. In Greek mythology, these hybrid beings are called chimeras. In biology, the term is used for organisms that comprise genetically different substances.

Gil Pellaton’s work spans installation and a wide array of media. This exhibition comprises different installation parts that are interrelated. They establish the grounds and the environment for both their audience and a possible appearance by the nameless and absent figure. One module consists of vacuum-sealed materials in transparent plastic. Organic substances—such as tiger balm and coriander in earlier works or the mixture of turmeric and bone glue that Pellaton used to cast this exhibition’s objects, which hang from ceiling contraptions and make their way down the middle of the room—provide clues to the contextual horizon against which his work can be perceived. We look in six hand mirrors held out towards us; in their polished, uneven metal surfaces, we see reflections of light and perhaps even our distorted mirror image. On a sunny day, we find ourselves on a calm sea, sharing a boat with two people and following their playful interaction. Our gaze shifts back and forth between this intimate, small-scale world and an indeterminate, enigmatic outside. The nameless figures will not appear. Instead, we catch ourselves in the process of filling their role in this strange world.

Gil Pellaton was born and raised in Biel/Bienne where he lives and works. From 2002 to 2005, he studied Graphic Design at the city’s Ecole d’Arts Visuels. While his artistic practice focused on painting for the first few years, he now works mostly with installations and across different media. From 2015 to 2017, Pellaton continued his education at the Art Institute HGK FHNW in Basel, graduating with a master's degree in Fine Arts. He was awarded the Kiefer Hablitzel / Göhner Art Prize in 2010 and the Louise Aeschlimann and Margareta Corti Fellowship in 2020. In recent years, Pellaton developed an intensive and programmatic exhibition activity. As an artist-in-residence, he has lived and worked in Buenos Aires, Porto, Genoa, and most recently in New York.
